To celebrate Scottish Food Fortnight, some the the Food Heroes in Skye and Lochalsh have got together to open their doors, to share their great passion for delicious tasting locally produced food and drink.

The featured producers invite you to experience a warm welcome to their businesses, to find out more about the product, see where it is made,and then enjoy a wee sample. Your holiday won't be complete without a Taste of Local Food from Skye and Lochalsh, so start the journey here!

Local producers provide welcome sustenance for sustainable expedition

Local producers have lent a helping hand to two young adventurers from Barra. On Monday 3rd August 2009 Tom Pendrey and Sam Bonfield paddled 300 kilometres round the Isle of Skye in sea kayaks in as environmentally friendly a way as possible.

Taking two weeks, they foraged and caught as much food as possible, receiving gifts of local produce the rest of the time. See www.sustainableexpeditions.org

The Glenview Hotel, Plockton Shores and Glenelg Village Shop have been awarded the highest accolades by Skye and Lochalsh Food Link (SLFL) producer members at the third annual Taste of Local Food Awards. The Three Chimneys Restaurant and Chandlery at The Bosville, won a Special Award for Continued Excellence in recognition of their ongoing support of local producers and whose outstanding commitment to ensuring the local provenance of the food they serve is the cornerstone of their kitchen ethos. Small scale local food production in Skye has never been healthier as new outlets help connect the suppliers to their consumers but is it enough to change longstanding reliance on the major outlets? A recent study claims to have shown that if every resident in Skye and Lochalsh spent just £2.50 on local food instead of the supermarket alternative it would save thousands of food miles and also generate £1.35m for the local economy.
